Wheatgrass : Unbiased opinion please
Question:

I've been having trouble getting my vitamins and nutrients. Lack of money, lack of planning, lack of nutritional knowledge. So, I do not get CLOSE to enough of the recommended vitamins and minerals in a day. Reading around, it sounds like the best multivitamin is not a multivitamin, but a product known as Wheatgrass.
I have searched over the internet about this product, and have found conflicting explanations. Some say it's a sham, some say it's a miracle.
What say ye?

What say ye? I use it. The powder is cheaper, but it taste yucky and its thick, so mix it with HOT water ( 8oz) and drink fast, they have liquid that is much better tasteing, but also much more expensive

Have you seen increased energy, healthier look, stronger immune system?
I am just curious as to what your experience is with this product.
Also, for anyone else who has used this product, do you find the powder to have the same benefits as the juice?
Thanks as always :)
EDIT :

Protein 860 mg
Sugars less than 1%
Chlorophyll 18.5 mg
Biotin 4 mcg
Vitamin A 1670 IU
Vitamin B-12 0.05 mcg
Vitamin E 320 mcg
Vitamin C 8 mcg
Folic Acid 21 mcg
Phosphorus 14 mg
Magnesium 4 mg
Iron 870 mcg
Calcium 15 mg
Potassium 15 mg
Moisture 6-7%
This is the nutritional information about the powder that I am thinking about buying. Is this impressive? I do not know the measurements. I'm assuming the mg is 'miligrams'. How does this stack up as far as vitamins are concerned? Now with this added information, would this be giving me substantial amounts of vitamins?
2ND EDIT :
Doing further research, these vitamins don't even come close to providing the recommend vitamins and minerals as suggested by Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy's Institute of Medicine. ( )
Actually, the notion that taking this powder is somehow equal to eating 1 1/2 pounds of vegetables, is simply deceptive. Let's just look at Vitamin A, shall we?
The Powder contains 1670 IU of Vitamin A. The MINIMUM amount we are supposed to have is 3,000 IU. But look at one cup of sliced carrots - 20509 IU !! That is over 12 times the amount of vitamin A that this supposed 'miracle' powder contains.
This is by no means an article. I have just been searching about this product, deciding if it is the 'real deal' or a sham. From looking at the vitamins and minerals listed on this product, it seems like a sham. However, I have heard some people tell of how wheat grass powder has visibly improved their health. So, anyone else who has tried this, please respond.

Answer:

I just bought the powder a couple of days ago and used it and it's pretty good. I was wondering if anyone here knows if you can cook with it?

Answer:

Wheatgrass juice tastes like freshly mowed lawn. I drank it for awhile back a few years ago. I didn't notice any changes other than nausea from the taste and a larger bicep from all the cranking of the juicer. I'm sure it's perfectly healthy and all, it's just not very appetizing by itself, or with other things. However, cats do seem to enjoy eating it. I have a bunch of seed around, maybe I'll start growing some again and try mixing it with other juices to make it more palatable.

Answer:

I like the taste of wheatgrass juice, although I don't drink it often. I use a green foods powder and mix it with my smoothies, but I don't consider that the same as a multi-vitamin, since it doesn't contain a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals. I take a multi-vitamin too.

Answer:

I'd rather just eat food.

Answer:

Just FYI since its sorta on the subject, we need Vitamin C in our bodies, but it has 0 benefit for the immune system. Just finished up a section on the blood in A&P & the good Dr. finished with a good rant about how Vitamin C doesn't help protect you and blah blah blah. Just another quarky little old wives tail.
But like rabid said, you'd be better off getting your vitamins from food. You mentioned $ & poor planning. Most of the multivitamins I've ever seen in stores were fairly expensive & you don't get calories from them.
Just my $.02 Good Luck

Answer:

Yes, of course it's best to get your nutrients from food, but I take supplements as a kind of insurance policy. I don't think anyone is saying that supplements should take the place of healthful foods.
But to address the original issue here of whether or not wheatgrass is good for you, it doesn't provide the variety and quantity of nutrients that a multi-vitamin would. It's a good source of some nutrients, but not others. So while it's good for you, I would be wary of claims that it will cure you of all that ails you. Your best bet is to eat a varied diet rich in veggies, fruits, whole grains and legumes, drink wheatgrass juice if you like it, and take a multi if you feel you're not eating as well as you could.
