What to eat?
Question: I'm a vegan but basically I eat junk (crisps etc.). I can't buy loads of pre-packaged stuff like Releat foods and fresh fruit and veg is expensive here (UK), but I just can't think of a good list of stuff to eat through the day usually. I just thought of the following list, but anyone else wanna try putting a list down for me? Cheers. By the way, I have the following to cook with: a steamer which I haven't bothered to find and wash yet :), a toaster, a kettle which I haven't bothered to wash yet, a sandwich toaster which needs a good clean and needs to be found (might not bother at all with it), a spoon (gonna get more cutlery though when I remember), a frying pan, and a milk pan (which works perfectly well as a saucepan as it's very good quality), access to a cooker, and access to a microwave (though I wanna start eating healthy food instead of microwaved stuff). BREAKFAST: Cereal with soya milk / toast / beans on toast (only occasionally cus the only tinned beans I found taht say vegan on em in Sainsbury's where I shop are organic ones which cost quite a bit for a student budget) DINNER (that's "lunch" to the Southerners): (Can't do chips yet as they don't cook right in a shallow frying pan) Veg and gravy (Sainsbury's doesn't sell vegemince any more and it's expensive in Tesco, and Sainsbury's own version of vegemince doesn't say vegan on it). That reminds me, I still need a tin opener. Must remember to buy one. Oh I also just remembered I need to buy a plate so I don't have to keep using my housemates' plates. TEA ("dinner" to Southerners :) hehe): Vegetable soup with bread rolls maybe? Needs to be easy to cook and cheap or reasonably-priced. Thanks  Answer: here are some things I eat ... BREAKFASTS: cereal & soymilk/ricemilk porridge. usually with a ton of jam or syrup though, so not so healthy :o toast with jam, or marmite, or PB cold leftover chinese takeaway! :lick: (and I need my coffee. and I drink a lot of orange juice too.) PACKED LUNCHES: big salads of any combination of the following - lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, raw spinach, marinated tofu, raisins, pineapple chunks, seeds/nuts, grapes hummus salad sandwiches marinated tofu, salad, and tortillas pasta salad of cold pasta (wholemeal if I'm feeling virtuous), peppadew peppers, olives, cucumber, and whatever else seems like a good idea at the time TEAS/DINNERS AT HOME: tinned soups, we're lucky in the UK in that a lot of ones available at the supermarket are vegan. meat-free ravioli from morrisons. ready meals: "pure and pronto", veggie chilli & rice from tesco beans on toast!!! yeah, I know you said this already :p curry made with curry-from-a-jar :p if you want to do this on the cheap, use frozen veg instead of fresh. voila! um ... there are more. I swear. I am having a mental block. Most baked beans (all? I have never seen baked beans that are not vegan unless they have sausages or something in them) are vegan in the UK even though they aren't labelled as such. Answer: beans and rice! they are so cheap and so delicious. If you want to learn how to use spices, beans and rice are the best places to start. Answer: if you want a new sandwich toaster, woolworths now do them for £5 [covets hers]. If you want cheap plates and stuff go into Wilkinson. I have a [free from freshers fair] spatula with a 25p sticker on it - 25p! Not that ill ever use a spatula haha. asda/tescos do cheap cooking stuff too. what about oven chips? theyre cheap if you get own-brand and you must have an oven tray! noodles are dead cheap, my university shop sells them 60p for a pack of 5 and theyre spinach flavoured! Boil water, tip noodles in, keep on boil for 5 minutes - tadaaa. can be mixed with loads! one of my favourite cheap meals is: Can of 'mixed beans' can of chopped tomatoes bag of spinach (can be left out) packet of chill con carne mix (meant for meat but is just spices) shove in pan and cook for about 20mins - tadaa goes good with rice which is also easy to cook and cheap if you dont buy microwave can be frozen too (will make at least 2 portions!) Sainsburys Vegan labelling is dodgy -dont rely on it! Tescos/asda beans are vegan too but just say veggie (sometimes nothing but theres no indication that theyre not!). get used to label reading instead of relying on signs, or you will end up paying loads extra! Heinz beans are vegan too. =0 theres meat free non-cheese ravioli?! next time im near a morrisons (which may be a while) im so going in! Answer: 1724702) =0 theres meat free non-cheese ravioli?! next time im near a morrisons (which may be a while) im so going in! yes I know, I was shocked too! :D Answer: Its in the tinned foods section. I got really creeped out by it when I first went veggie, it tastes too much like the meat kind. Answer: Doesn't the meat-free ravioli have egg or milk in it? Also I'd rather only buy stuff that says 'vegan' on it where possible due to the fact that it would seem, according to the UK's Vegan Society, lifting agents may be used which are not mentioned on the ingredients ( - scroll to the bottom, it says: 'Animal products are sometimes used in instances that are not immediately obvious, for example as: carriers - gelatine may be used to carry beta-carotene and D2 processing aids - lactose is often used to fix flavour in crisps release agents - may be used to prevent confectionery and baked goods adhering to manufacturing equipment' [emphasis added]) Answer: If i only bought food labelled vegan i'd be bored, starving and poor! For some reason i expected the ravioli to be in the fridge bit. i guess then it definately would have egg in! morrisons is a trek (and will involve running across a motorway haha) but it seems quite vegan friendly, hmmmmmmm. Answer: 1724843) If i only bought food labelled vegan i'd be bored, starving and poor! ditto.
